- 1187 - European forces defeated by Muslim armies at Battle of Hattin; Jerusalem recaptured by Muslims.
- 1189 - Third Crusade launched in response to European losses in Palestine.
- 1200s - Mongolian steppe faces a subsistence crisis due to a drop in the mean annual temperature, which reduced the supply of grass for grazing animals; this crisis forced the nomadic peoples into a migration that resulted in one of the largest empires of all time.
