[edit] Life

  • Much of Kenya is in the grip of the worst drought in a decade. According to the UN, which has appealed for more than £140 million to provide emergency food aid, nearly four million people need help. So far, human casualties are thought to be low but malnutrition rates are climbing and many thousands of animals have died. Pray for the ending of this drought and that aid that is being sent will reach the most, needy.
  • A report by Save the Children says that four out of five children in orphanages still have a living parent. Orphanage life means that millions of children are unnecessarily at risk of the widespread dangers of living in institutions, including rape, exploitation, trafficking and beatings. In Kenya a combination of a lack of money, physical abuse, the effects of HIV/AIDS and last year's inter-tribal violence are taking their toll. Many children forced onto the streets are pushed into a life of crime. Pray for the churches and agencies that are seeking to help, rescue and support many of these children.

[edit] Economy

  • Kenya's economy has suffered over the years from severe drought, political problems, water and energy rationing, and reduced agricultural production.

[edit] Government

  • Kenya served as an important mediator for the Sudan conflict in 2005 and provided shelter to 250,000 refugees, including Ugandans who crossed the border seeking a safe-haven from the Ugandan army opposition (CCF).

[edit] Election Disruption

  • Political violence erupted after the general election on December 27th, 2007. Mr. Railyi Odinga, leader of the opposition Orange Democratic Party, claimed the election was fradulent. The President, Mwai Kibaki, is not willing to step down, while the opposition calls for presidential voting within next three months. The Opposition Party is calling for international intervention, but the government is resisting. There was significant bloodshed (with 300+ feared dead). No one is working. Over 30 were burnt in a church in Eldoret as they took refuge there. More than 100,000 have been displaced. Transportation has broken down and shops have been closed. There is looting and shootings in the streets. Many are fleeing Uganda, and the Ugandan Army on the border is on stand-by. (Kenya Prayer Team)
  • By April, Kenya seems back on track after a brief breaking off of talks that temporarily threatened gains from the breakthrough that happened on February 28. Raila Odinga, the opposition leader has now been sworn in as Kenya’s new premier. He has promised a "new, inclusive Kenya, we can now consign Kenya's past failures of grand corruption and grand tribalism to our history books."
  • Praise God for the great freedom to preach the gospel since independence, for the receptivity of the people and for the exciting growth of the Church. Over four-fifths of the population claim to be Christian, and Christians are found in every level of society. Pray that Christians may bring truth and moral uplift to the nation as it seeks to step back from the brink of political disaster and inter-ethnic conflict which it reached after the elections at christmas time.
  • A year after an accord was signed in Kenya paving the way for a unique political partnership, the country is deadlocked, its people despondent and lawmakers are losing public support by the day. Pray for a political solution that provides for a lasting peace.

[edit] Mungiki

  • Mungiki is a politico-religious group and a banned criminal organization in Kenya. The name means "A united people" or "multitude" in the Kikuyu language. The religion, which apparently originated in the late 1980s, is secretive and bears some similarity to mystery religions, which is known by law enforcement officials as a violent sect.
  • Maina Njenga, the leader of Mungiki said he converted to Christianity together with hundreds of other members on 25 October. Kenya's Mungiki leader goes into hiding after Christian conversion, because he had been warned by security sources he would be killed within a month. See more details - [1].

[edit] Churches

  • Unfortunately, many church leaders have lined up according to their own tribal backgrounds in the current conflict. They need to reach across the ethnic and political divide to love one another and stand as one body to bring Christ’s reconciliation to their tormented nation. Many churches are taking a stand and help with disaster relief, but there are also many churches that have already been divided.
  • This whole ordeal has caused many to see that among the good wheat there has also been the weeds that have sprung up alongside of the good crop (see Matthew 13:24-30). In a way, even though it is tragic, this whole thing is causing the church to wake up. Would Jesus have come in a twinkle of an eye and the rapture have happened, many “Christians” would not have been ready. Many church goers have been drawn into this conflict as well. People are waking up to the reality that their ties with the world are closer than their walk with the Lord. This is a wake-up call for us all. We are reminded again that we are living in the last days were the love of many will wax cold and there will be rumors of wars and much conflict.
